What I Learned:

Posted by: Rachel | May 22, 2008 | 2 Comments |

Some of the things I learned through our documentary:
- how to film
- what diff. camera angles were called
- editing (cutting clips, music, etc.)
- most random people are willing to help you out (aka street interviews)
-blogging is not that much fun, but it’s a necessary evil
-making a documentary is a lot harder than it looks, doing this documentary made me think differently about how people film

Documentary Screening

Posted by: Rachel | May 19, 2008 | No Comment |

Dear Editors,

Thank you so much for taking the time to look at my blogs. I’ve learned a lot from this project as I hope you have. I appreciate everyones’ comments on my research and I was always happy to see I had a new comment on one of my blogs. We are screening our documentary this week and I hope you can attend.

Here is a formal invitation with the details.

I think the film is going well. It’s really time consuming but it’s good to do something different. At the same time though, I can’t help but think how easy it would have been to put together a paper. One thing that I think is works really well about this project is that the whole class is working together on different aspects of the documentary. This is a way better idea than doing five different documentaries.

What else needs to be done: We haven’t done a lot of filming besides street interviews so we need to do that. Then we need to edit it and just polish it up (a.k.a. transitions, music, etc.)

Reflection about Outing

Posted by: Rachel | May 5, 2008 | 1 Comment |

The street interviews went really well. My group got four interviews and all of them are usable. I was surprised that the people that we interviewed all actually had something to say and didn’t answer just yes or no. They were really helpful. The only thing that I would have changed would have been the weather. We could have gotten better sound quality if it wasn’t windy.

I think some music that might work well would be “Under Pressure” by Queen, and some classical music for our metaphor

Title and Intro Blog

Posted by: Rachel | May 5, 2008 | 1 Comment |

The title for our whole documentary “You are Warned: You will be Warmed. A documentary about Global Warming.” I’ll be honest I didn’t think of that title all on my own I found it off a search engine but it’s not copy-righted so we can use it.

I think the intro should include a most of our metaphors since they acts as hooks and would get the audience interested.

2 More Summ. Response

Something is wrong with my blog because it won’t let me rename the link but if you click on what I’ve written it will redirect you to the article.

This article is about Al Gore’s new project to educate America about global warming. The project is called The Alliance for Climate Protection. This project is supposed to span three years and is a multi-million dollar mission. The group believes that if they can get people educated and interested in global warming then those people will call for change. The Alliance for Climate Protection is focusing mostly on advertising and will be using mostly politicians as their celebrities.

What I like about this article is that they are trying to motivate people to take action. Advertising is also probably the most effective way to instigate change. However I feel like skeptics might not believe in this program as much because its from Al Gore who some believe to be over the top about global warming. Another thing that I like about this article is that it says that Gore has donated massive amounts from the profits from his documentary An Inconvenient Truth and from his winnings from the Nobel Peace Prize. It’s good to see people be the change they want others to embolden.

This article focuses on species endangerment or extinction thanks to global warming. It provides solid evidence talking about the current climate change taking place and how various species have been affected. This type of data is a lot more indisputable than the predicted computer-generated data that many other articles use. The article says that as the temperatures rise animals are moving towards cooler climates. This disrupts whole ecosystems. There is a controversy among biologists as to what should be done. Wendy Foden, a conservation biologist with the World Conservation Union said, “If our job as biologist is to conserve species, then certainly we must move them. But if it’s to conserve natural evolutionary processes…then we have to give them corridors and let them do their thing.”

I thought there were a lot of surprising data in this article. The one that stuck to me the most was the one that said Mediterranean Jellyfish are being found off the coast of Ireland. That’s a huge change. Besides disrupting local beach-goers, this must put a major strain on the both of those fragile ecosystems.

Metaphors

Posted by: Rachel | April 24, 2008 | 5 Comments |

1. Starts off with the camera angling up towards the sun which is just blinding. The we see someone wearing a winter-coat, hats, mittens, and a scarf. Then a zoom in on the neck/face and see sweat beading up. I think this would be a good part to start off our interviews from people on the street because it could show some misconceptions about what the average person believes about global warming.
2. We could film animals (polar bears at the zoo, or everyday animals like birds etc.) and then have that fade out effect happen. So it would look like animals were disappearing which is a possible consequence of climate change. This would probably be best for the consequences section of our documentary.
3. Someone dressed in a suit booting you out of your house for no reason. This would symbolize animals loosing their habitats.
4. Scoop of blue ice cream w/ green sprinkles on top of a cone melting and then it falls off at just splats on the ground.
5. It should be a sunny day once again and we zoom up to a little patch of grass with a nice flower in it. We hear some nice frolicky classical music in the background and then the music changes to some more intense impending doom kind of classical music. Now we see a magnifying glass come into the shot and the sun light is reflecting off it into the grass burning it a little. We could have some overlaying text saying “This is what’s happening now. We are stuck in a green-house situation.”

I think whichever metaphor we choose should be put towards the beginning of our chapter of the film because it’s like a hook. It would just flow together best if it was towards the beginning. Out of the metaphors I’ve came up with I think the first or the last one would be best because they are the most developed and have a lot of variety.

Interview

Posted by: Rachel | April 18, 2008 | No Comment |

Hi, I’m Rachel from Parkway North and we’re doing a documentary on global warming. I was wondering if I could ask you a few questions. It would only take about ten minutes of your time and it would really help me out. If you’d want I could email you the questions in advance and I could call you back or you could email your answers back, whichever is more conveinent.
Ok, well here are the questions: 1.What is your initial reaction when you hear the words global warming? 2.What do you think global warming is? 3.How do you think we’ve contributed to it? 4.Where do you see it affecting us the most? 5. How do you think global warming will affect us personally? 6.When do you think we will start seeing the effects? 7.Do you think we will be able to adapt to these changes? 8.Do you think anything positive could come out of the situation? 9.How can we help the situation? 10.Do you think the whole topic is overblown? Why or Why not?
Thanks so much for you time. It’s much appreciated.
